ELAD SDR transceiver
FDM-DUO from Elad (Italy)
A SDR transceiver with 5 W output that can operate as a stand-alone without a PC!
The small transceiver is equipped with the latest SDR technology: A fast analog-digital-converter samples the received HF directly into digital signals and a downstream DSP module provides for filtering and processing. Another ARM processor handles the signals of the control unit.
One highlight of the FDM-DUO is the possibility to use it standalone without a computer also. Then, this transceiver is a perfect companion for the QRP fan, so that you can have a modern SDR with you even on holidays. The controls are very easy to use for a portable QRP transceiver. In addition to a big VFO knob there are two smaller knobs for volume and filter-center/width (amongst others). Six buttons below the well readable LC-display access the most important functions directly. Less frequently used settings are available via menu system.
Connected to a PC, FDM-DUO is a very modern SDR receiver and transmitter with capabilities which are usually available in very large large radios only.
The device receives from 10 kHz to 54 MHz. A 16-bit ADC with 122 MHz sampling rate is built-in. Receive modes are: SSB, CW, AM (incl. Sync-AM), FM, WFM (incl. Stereo and RDS!), RTTY and DRM. The transmitter has 5 W output power, alternatively a HF output jack with 0 dBm output.
Together with a computer the possibilities for the FDM-DUO are extended quite considerably of course. Three(!) USB 2.0 interfaces offer a wide range of possibilities. One interfaces works as a CAT controller, another one provides digital I/Q data for the waterfall diagram, and the third USB port serves as a external sound card for the PC! This way the FDM-DUO can be used for digital modes such as RTTY, PSK31 etc. By distributing these functions to three separate USB interfaces the handling for the user is made much easier, in most cases no additional USB drivers are required.
The FDM-DUO has two configurable antenna jacks: RX/TX on the same jack, or RX and TX on one jack each.

QSF-06 Preselector New
The QSF-06 is a freely configurable pre-selector with up to six switchable filters. The automatic control is designed for use with the FDM-DUO transceiver, but could be adapted to any other radio as well. The QSF-06 uses the same filter boards which are already available for the FDM-DUO-R SDR receiver. This includes empty prototyping boards for own filter designs.
The enclosure of the QSF-06 has the same size and design as the FDM-DUO qrp transceiver and therefore also fits optically very nicely. When shipped no filter is installed (except a "by pass" board). The user has to equip the preselector with up to six filters of his or her choice. Filters exist as high or low pass for long and medium wave, as well as band filters for the ham radio bands on shortwave.
The filter selection is driven via the "EXT I/O" port of the FDM-DUO, a suitable cable is provided with the QSF-06. The transmit/receive relay switches the filter into the signal path only on reception. A configuration of the filter selection in the "FDM-DUO Manager" software is required once, so the software knows which filter to use when. The QSF-06 includes all cables required for use of the preselector with the FDM-DUO.

The following filters are available for the QSF-06 and must be ordered separately. Included in the shipment of the QSF-06 is only a "by pass" Board.
FDM-DUO CW Demo Video
A customer asked us about the behaviour of the FDM-DUO in telegraphy when transmitting, especially about a possible latency when keying and the noise of the transmit relay. We took the opportunity to produce this simple video.
Obviously the microphone of the camera (in 20cm distance) is very sensitive in that audio range, so the click of the transmit relay is more present than it actually is. In reality the click is not disturbing at all, it is not louder than with other transceivers in this size. There was no discernible latency when keying the radio, noot even in Full BK. Perhaps the AGC setting could be improved for Full BK.
